A Timmins business owner is heading up a campaign to provide detox and rehab for drug addicts.
Joe Stanlake wants Boreal Recovery Solutions to eventually get corporate and government support, admitting what can be done locally is a small drop in a large bucket.
“It was more about just doing something as we know, all of the ranting and raving and arguing and all of that stuff and nobody’s stepping up to do anything,” he says.
Stanlake’s committee is working with mental health and addiction counsellor Marcel Prudhomme, who has developed a treatment program. Prudhomme says addiction is not a behavioural or personality issue, it’s a disease of the brain.
Corporations would pay privately for their employees to get treatment. But Stanlake says there’s also a fundraising component.
“Yes, it’s private but there would be things there where the people that can’t afford it , the treatment would be there,” he points out, “and that’s where certainly with fundraising and other ideas, we can all help.
