‘Riparian project’ underway at Porcupine Lake

Discovery Silver – formerly Newmont – is planting native grasses along the shore of Porcupine Lake.

Vice-president of environment Gerry Stinson says it’s what’s called a riparian project.

“It’s expected to directly improve habitat conditions by preventing erosion, improving water quality, enhancing habitat,” he tells My Timmins Now Dot Com. “Together these factors result in benefits to the productivity of small- or large-body fish species.”

Stinson says it’s all part of a requirement under the Federal Fisheries Act.

“We have activities that are happening on the Dome property that require federal authorizations where in turn you have to do offsetting programs outside of that, because of those activities at the Dome site.”

Stinson says the project was picked due to is uniqueness and benefit to the community. It’s being done in conjunction with the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority and the support of the city, Northern College and Friends of the Porcupine River Watershed.
