A South Porcupine landmark on the highway will soon be gone.
Ontario Provincial Police are demolishing the two-storey red brick building that hasn’t been used for many years.
Acting Sergeant Michelle Simard says it’s antiquated and doesn’t meet accessibility standards.
“It was the original District 15 headqu8arters,” she notes, “which had the communications centre at the time and a detachment. It hasn’t been used since I’ve been here, almost 27 years.”
There are still two office buildings on the property. The one on the left as you look at it from the highway is the detachment. The one on the right is the OPP’s forensics identification section.
“Taking down this building doesn’t interrupt the service that the OPP provides to the surrounding areas,” Simard says. “No services are interrupted, it’s business as usual here. We’re just cleaning up the yard.”
