You wouldn’t be hard pressed to find someone in Timmins who says it’s about time the McIntyre Community Building was named a heritage building. That has now been done.
At a ceremony Wednesday morning in the Bickell Auditorium – the home of the Timmins Sports Hall of Fame – Mayor Michelle Boileau remarked that the building embodies the past, present and future.
“The heritage we commemorate today is still very much alive,” she told the gathering. “Tomorrow’s historic moments are being created here today, each and every day, thanks to the people who truly make the Mac a cornerstone of community life.”
The iconic building is widely known a lot further afield than Timmins. Since 1938, it has hosted thousands of events that cover a wide spectrum.
City councillor Andrew Marks is chair of the heritage committee.
“Some would say that the Mac is the heart of our city,” he stated, “certainly a space that has been used for celebration, commemoration and all things sport.”
The official heritage plaque is on the outside wall, to the right of the arena entrance.
