Timmins’ biggest tourist attraction opens for the 2025 season next Saturday, May 31st.
It’s the Hollinger Mine open pit lookout, just off Brunette Road.
Gerry Stinson is the vice-president of environment for Discovery Silver Porcupine Operations, formerly Newmont. He says operations in the pit aren’t running, so there’s not a lot of activity. But it’s still a neat view, as is the panorama of the city, if you turn around.
“I guess the good news is that we’re not expecting at this point to be shutting down for any blasting,” says Stinson, “so we should be open concurrently throughout the day.”
Stinson says it’ll be open from 8:00am until 8:00pm every day through the summer, well into the fall.
“Well, it’s really weather dependent, but we really try to make an effort to stay open just beyond Thanksgiving weekend, to try to give families an opportunity to go up there one last time before the end of the year.”
