Right in time for the unofficial first long weekend of the summer, the flood warning for the Mattagami River Watershed has been lowered to a watch.
Timmins Flood Advisory Committee chair David Valliere says, however, that the watch serves as notice that there is still the potential for flooding.
“The river’s still high, but we got some warmer temperatures,” he points out. “Luckily we’ve had very minimal precipitation in the last few weeks. Most of the snow has melted in the watershed, so we figured it was prudent to lower the warning to a watch.”
“We could escalate back up to a warning, depending on any precipitation events that we get over the next few days. We are still meting on a daily basis and will continue to watch it.”
Valliere adds that Kamiskotia Lake and Porcupine Lake have been given the all-clear, and a watershed statement for both of them is no longer in effect.
