All four lanes along Algonquin will be closed for a special ceremony at City Hall tomorrow afternoon. The highway will be closed between Pine and Balsam, starting at 12:30pm and re-opening at 2:30pm. Several hundred primary and secondary school students will be at the ceremony which is honouring 400 years of Francophone culture in Ontario. Police are shutting the road down for safety of the students and everyone attending the ceremony.
The decision to close the road came after a lengthy discussion at city council last week. Council was split, some thinking only two lanes would be closed, instead of all four. However the safety issue won out, and council agreed to let all four lanes close for two hours.
