Number of water main breaks so far in January in Timmins is about average

It seems like there have been a lot of water main breaks in Timmins the last little while. Environmental services manager for the city, Tyler Cheff says the number so far this year isn’t all that high.

“So since January, we’ve actually had five water main breaks,” he tells My Timmins Now Dot Com. “It may seem we’ve had more than typical, but I think it’s because they’ve been coming in in groups, so it seems excessive.”

Cheff adds that by this point in January last year, there had been four breaks.

“The common cause let’s say is the ground movement for the most part, with the frost and the significant weather events we’ve been having the last few weeks, also combined with aging infrastructure,” Cheff explains.

One of those breaks caused postponement of Sunday’s Timmins Rock game, and the closure of the Mac into Monday.
