January 27th every year is Family Literacy Day. Family activities surrounding it take place at the main branch of the Timmins Public Library.
Child and youth services librarian Francine Denis says there are English and French readings; board games; and a craft activity linked to this year’s theme “Learn to be green together”.
Denis says the ability to read and understand is a foundation to a child’s life journey.
“Without literacy, even for adults, it’s very difficult for them to do their day-to-day living: Going onto the internet, filling a form, even reading road signs; so that’s all part of literacy,” she illustrates.
Literacy can be fun and not just because you have to read for school.
Denis says you use the ability to read and understand every day of your life.
“You can go to the grocery store and say ‘What aisle are we in? Are we going to find our crackers in this aisle? Does it say crackers on the top?’ You’re surrounded by literacy no matter how you look at it and everybody benefits from literacy.”
The full list of Family Literacy Day activities is on the library’s Facebook page.
