Raising money for cancer research with a 25 km walk

A local woman who has been fighting cancer for almost ten years is doing her part to raise awareness. Diane Lamothe was diagnosed with leukemia in 2006. She says it’s an environmental cancer, that will never fully go away. But she has been cancer free for six years now. She says it will come back, and when it does, stem-cell research is her next step.

Lamothe recently walked in the One Walk to Conquer Cancer in Toronto, a 25-kilometre walk to raise awareness and funds. She says she does it because she wants to be able to give back. She says she wanted to be able to collect money, and do something meaningful with this accomplishment.

During the walk, cancer survivors have a special lanyard. Lamothe says that lets everyone see each other. She says the 25-kilometre walk was a long one, but encouragement from her team, volunteers, friends, and family made it easier.

All of the money from the walk goes to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. Lamothe’s team of five raised over $11,000.
