City Hall is getting tough on people who rent out temporary accommodations – more commonly know as B&B.
It’s to ensure that the owners of those properties are getting a licence for them… following all the rules… and probably most importantly… paying the city the 4% municipal accommodation tax. Hotels across the city pay it, too.
A bylaw passed at this week’s council meeting is extremely detailed, and makes provision for a bylaw enforcement officer to stay on top of the issue.
The tax – commonly called “MAT” – is under study currently, with an eye to increasing it to 6%.
