Transit fares in Timmins are not going up in 2025. When the new year arrives, however, you will have new options to pay for the ride.
Ken Krcel is the director of transit for the city. He says beginning January 6th, all Timmins Transit buses will have electronic fare boxes.
You can get a card that you can reload on your phone, or install an app that allows you to use a QR code to pay a single fare or for a ten-ride or monthly pass.
The traditional “exact change method” will still be available.
“We’re going to accept cash,” Krcel reassures. “We’re going to accept the tickets that have ben issued to date. So those will still be available, but we’re moving more to the 21st century with more of a pay-as-you-go system.”
Krcel says the money for the boxes does not come from your property taxes. It’s paid for by a federal infrastructure improvement grant, and from the Ontario gas tax.
“We get gas tax funding specifically for transit, which is separate from the gas tax funding the municipality gets that they can use on other infrastructure.”
The change will not affect any jobs at Timmins Transit.
