An ongoing Timmins Police enforcement effort that began in mid-October is already showing results.
Deputy Chief Darren Dinel says uniformed officers are visibly patrolling downtown, responding to issues proactively.
So far, it results in 17 arrests with six suspects held for bail hearings; and several seizures, including an admittedly inconsequential amount of drugs.
“One notable seizure that they made for property crimes was that they did se3ize some stolen hockey skates valued at approximately $7,000,” the deputy adds. “They were taken from a local hockey team.”
That seizure happened in the first week of the initiative. The skates were stolen from the Timmins Rock.
Dinel says it’s a good first step.
“As our staffing levels come up, we are putting those resources out into the community when and where we can in the most effective way, and this is one of those ways that we could contribute back to the community.”
Dinel adds that the ongoing program is under evaluation with a view extend it into 2025. And he encourages anyone who witnesses crime to report it.
