City Hall has officially designated itself a heritage property.
It’s actually the work of the city’s municipal heritage committee.
At a small plaque unveiling ceremony, Mayor Michelle Boileau commented on how essential it is when planning for growth, to preserve the pieces of our heritage.
She became mayor during the celebration of the building’s 85th anniversary.
“We had done a bit of an education campaign with the school boards, wewere able to welcome school groups come through and it was so heartwarming to see the awe of our youth as they came through the building and they got to see our City Hall here,” she told the gathering.
The mayor says she has learned a lot herself about the building and the dignitaries who have visited it.
Former mayor Tom Laughren was on hand for the ceremony.
“I’ve been able to travel a little bit since I’ve been retired,” he noted, “and it’s kind of amazing, you go into a lot of other communities, and the good job they’ve done of kind of preserving their history, preserving their downtowns as it relates to that history.”
Laughren, who was mayor from 2006 to 2014, says the recent designation of the Mackechnie home on Wilson Ave. and the upcoming designation of the McIntyre Community Building are steps in the right direction.
