New pickleball courts inaugurated in Mountjoy Arena parking lot

The City of Timmins has served up a pair of pickleball courts replacing the tennis court outside the Mountjoy Arena.

Rock Whissell, the councillor for that area, says he’s glad his ward has the first city-owned facility, and looks forward to more.

“I’m hoping that the city will continue improving our facilities and adding more throughout the city,” he tells My Timmins Now Dot Com. “As of right now, these are the first two official courts and looking forward to adding more throughout the city.”

Facilities and recreation supervisor Fred Salvador says as pickleball explodes in popularity, players are looking for access to their own courts. And the recreation master plan calls for more attention to racket sports.

“This is the first step for us in taking an existing tennis court that was in not the greatest shape,” he says, “resurfacing it with fiberglass and all the new colours that are on this court. So now it’s a fulltime pickleball court.”

The Timmins Pickleball Association has capped membership at 115 players, due to limited playing space and time.
