Timmins history: More tourist attractions

This is the final time – for now – that our weekly Timmins history feature will look at tourist attractions of historical significance.

Museum director-curator Karen Bachmann says there’s a plaque on Porcupine Lake, commemorating the Great Fire of 1911.

And in downtown Timmins, a plaque erected in honour of the most famous country singer to call this her hometown.

“There is still a Shania Twain plaque downtown,” says Bachmann. “It’s one of the few Shania things that are left within the community, but it is still there.”

And finally, one that you probably drive past every day.  Bachmann points out the Hollinger Park grandstand.

“There are not very many left of that design in North America,” she tells us. “So it’s kind of a fun thing that we still own and we still have and they will be used quite a lot this summer, from what I understand.”

You can listen to the entire interview from which we’ve derived the instalments for this series, right here.
