Downtown could see all-way stops soon

Council is still discussing whether all-way stops in the downtown BIA is a good idea.

A test period will begin on March 29th and go until May 28th giving the city time to see the transition into spring with more pedestrians out.

Councillor Pat Bamford is sceptical of the idea saying that new modern cities are focusing on being pedestrian friendly rather than vehicle friendly and stop signs just aren’t safe for foot traffic.

During pilot project “stop sign ahead” signs will be mounted as a warning to drivers they will have to stop soon. As well, the current signage exempting left turns during certain times will be covered up so turning left will always be an option.

The city will track traffic counts both vehicle and pedestrian.

One of the main concerns from the public is cost but it’s a non-issue according to City Engineer Luc Duval there is $500,000 already in necessary upgrades.
