Guy Bourgouin says government action is needed to improve truck driver safety

The New Democrat MPP for Mushkegowuk James Bay believes a recent survey completed by the Ontario Truckers Association shows an urgent need for improved safety measures including the passing of his proposed private members bill.

Guy Bourgouin says this all could be cleared up when MPPs return to Queen’s Park next month.

“And the government has the power to pass it right now because I have seen those right before the break, and they can pass this bill pretty quick to address the number one concern of truckers and that is unsafe passing by other vehicles and all types of vehicles.”

Bourguouin’s bill would make it illegal to pass on a double solid line. Another concern by truck drivers was the lack of rest areas.

Bourgouin says the province has announced that several more are being built including one near Driftwood on Highway 11.

“There’s one right before Constance Lake the government done but we need more and the trucker are asking for more,” he said. “But also with washrooms because they can go to the washroom and if they want to spend the night they can at least they can have a rest area that can address that concern.”
