Schumacher Lions helping to address doctor shortage in the north

The Schumacher Lions Club (Club) is doing its part to make sure our community’s health is taken care of.
At this month’s meeting, the club donated $7,500 to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University (NOSM).
“We know all about the doctor shortage in Northern Ontario, and how NOSM is striving to help relieve that,” says Wayne Snider, the Club’s Secretary. “We feel that’s a very important cause. Not just here in Timmins and the Immediate area, but all across the North.”
Snider says the school has a campus in both Sudbury and Thunder Bay, and each student spends nearly a year shadowing and helping doctors in Northern Communities, with a commitment to spend at least two years in the north upon graduation.
“It helps lessen the burden [on the health care system], and you never know. When people come up to the north, sometimes they love it here, and this is where they’ll stay. That’s the long-term goal and we’re on board with that. Big time,” finishes Snider.
