Anyone who drives under the speed limit along King St. – the highway through Porcupine — is in the minority.
In response to several complaints, city police deployed their speed measuring trailer there between August 23rd and this past Wednesday. Communications coordinator Marc Depatie has the results.
“A total of 30,131 vehicles had their speed recorded. Of those, 25,407 were found to be travelling above the speed limit,” he reports.
That’s 84.3%. Depatie says one driver must be a test pilot. They were clocked at 194 km/h an hour in the 50 km/h zone.
“We are deploying platoon officers and traffic section officers to send a message, hopefully, and remedy the situation as best we can in terms of enforcement,” Depatie adds.
Depatie reminds us that King St. is a community safety zone with increased fines. It’s also a school zone with several homes, a smattering of businesses, and the Porcupine post office.
