UPDATE SEPT. 26: The fire department investigation is over, and the cause ruled “undetermined”. Deputy Fire Chief Scott Atkinson calls the investigation “lengthy”, and unable to pinpoint an exact cause.
Reality set in for Don Marcoux on Tuesday as he watched a backhoe tear down the office trailer at his Mini-Putt at Hollinger Park. It was gutted by a fire overnight Sunday. Marcoux says memories of the past 35 years came flooding back.
Like the proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes, he’s hoping to open this weekend provided it’s safe to use the mini-putt course.
“Definitely shooting for Labour Day to try to have a temporary opening and to say thanks to the public for supporting and all the good wishes,” he tells My Timmins Now Dot Com.
He’ll dig out some old putters and get more.
“Not sure where we’re going to be with the batting cage, because of power issues,” he notes. “But definitely the Mini-Putt will be running, as long as everything is safe and I get approval that everything’s okay to do what I’d like to do.”
City police say the fire is still being probed by criminal investigators and the fire department. A cause has yet to be determined.
