We’re getting close to the 2023 edition of the Terry Fox Run and Walk for Cancer Research. It’s on Sunday, September 17th between 11:00am and 2:00pm at Gillies Lake. Everything will be set up outside the conservation authority office.
Committee chair Cathy Davis says it keeps the Marathon of Hope alive, raising money for cancer research through the Terry Fox Foundation. This year’s theme is “Dear Terry”. It picks up from the 65,000 letters mailed to Fox after he had to abandon his cross-Canada run.
“We’re going to be passing out postcards, Dear Terry cards, and it’s free postage,” explains Davis. “People can put their own notes in and they will be sending them in to the (Terry Fox) Toronto foundation office and we’re going to sort of to reenact what happened 43 years ago.”
He died 42 years ago, yet Cathy Davis tells us the foundation is still following Terry Fox’s wishes.
“Before Terry died, people sat down with him and he gave them his wishes and told his parents and I believe at the time it was the Canadian Cancer Society what he wanted to happen.”
That was Fox’s way of continuing the fundraising he started with his Marathon of Hope.
More details on the September 17th event are on the Timmins Terry Fox Facebook page.
