Timmins track athlete competing at nationals

A 15-year-old Ecole Secondaire Catholique Thériault student is representing Ontario at the Legion Youth Track and Field national championships later this month.

Jillian Daguerre is going to Sherbrooke, QC for the meet. She has qualified in three events.

“So for my race walk, I have a pretty good chance at a podium,” she forecasts. “My steeplechase, I’m just trying to get a new PB (personal best). And for my javelin, I’m not too sure how my competition looks like.

Daguerre is on the track team at Thériault, and also trains with Real North Athletics in Timmins.

She has never been to Sherbrooke before, and hopes to have some time to explore.

“I’m not sure if we’re going to do any touring,” she says, “ but at the end of our meet, we are doing a dragon boat race, which I’m super excited to find out what it is.”

A family friend who owns a hearing clinic is Sudbury is helping to pay the way for Mom and Dad Daguerre to go to Sherbrooke with Jillian.

UPDATE: Jillian won bronze in the 1500m racewalk, bettering her former personal best by 26 seconds, with a time of 9:13.
