City councillor John Curley thinks he has a potential solution to shortages within the ranks of the Timmins Police Service, and its tremendous workload dealing with homelessness, crime and drug abuse on our streets.
He’s bringing a resolution to the next council meeting. It will suggest that the provincial solicitor general be asked to consider the OPP assuming jurisdiction over all or part of city police responsibilities.
“Timmins is such a vast area that their focus has been, and rightfully so, on the downtown area where all the issues are taking place,” he tells My Timmins Now Dot Com, “but the outlying areas, the calls that I get lots of, and they’re not happy with the service they’re getting.”
Curley says that a partial takeover could have OPP responsible for the outlying areas and acting as back-up to the TPS.
“I would like (council) to just review it, hear what they have to say, and if the solicitor general’s in agreement, one or the other, then the process can start.”
Council meets on Tuesday, August 8th.
