Pickleball takes over curling club for summer

Curling all winter; indoor pickleball all summer.

That’s the route being taken by the McIntyre Curling Club… says president Steve Meunier.

“We’ve been able to put six courts down on the ice pad or the cement,” he explains, “and two of them actually double as badminton courts.”

The Oxford Dictionary defines pickleball as “a game resembling tennis in which players use paddles to hit a perforated plastic ball over a net.”

Pickleball Canada says its popularity is exploding, and the game is moving from one played mostly by older adults to younger people. Meunier says he was surprised at the large turnout last Monday night at a pickleball open house.

For now, the six courts are available Mondays and Wednesdays between 1:00pm and 4:00pm, and Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

“We would look at expanding or potentially changing them (times)  if there’s more of a demand for people to play in the afternoon versus the evenings,” says Meunier. “We’ll tailor it to what the demand is out there.”

There’s more information on the McIntyre Curling Club website and Facebook page.
