Forest fire breaks out in rural west end

THURSDAY MORNING UPDATE: MNRF has downsized its estimate of the size of the fire, to 8.5 hectares. That’s roughly 15 football fields in area.

Just hours before the Restricted Fire Zone took effect, a forest fire was reported near Malette Rd., in the rural west end of Timmins.

Deputy Fire Chief Scott Atkinson says it was reported at around 4:00pm Wednesday. The Timmins Fire Department and crews from the MNRF responded. Atkinson says it’s five kilometres down Malette Rd., about 25 km west of downtown, and east of Hwy. 144.

Three water bombers were also assigned to the fire along with ground crews.  As of late last night, the ministry was saying it was 10 ha in size and not under control.

The only other active fire in the Timmins district – just east of the junction of Highways 144 and 560 – is now under control.  Reported on Sunday, it never grew beyond two hectares.
