Direct plea made to provincial transportation minister to take back Municipal Rd.

The pitch has been made directly to provincial transportation minister Caroline Mulroney to do something about Municipal Road.

The former Hwy. 67 was downloaded to Timmins and Iroquois Falls several years ago, and is in terrible shape. It runs between Hwy. 101 near Kettle Lakes Park to Hwy. 11 near Porquis.

Timmins councillor John Curley spoke to the minister at the recent Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities conference.  He says he asked her to take the road back.

“Neither Iroquois Falls who owns part of it as well as the City of Timmins can afford to maintain,” Curley told Mulroney, “and there’s also a provincial park on it. And so her comments were that we’d have to find out if it’s local traffic or provincial traffic.”

Curley says Iroquois Falls is doing that survey right now.  Failing re-assuming the road, Curley wants the government to pay for repairs and maintenance. He also notes that an increase in crashes involving transports on Highway 11 leads to a detour of provincial traffic onto deteriorating Municipal Road to 101 and points south from there.

“So it is a vital connection for the province to take that highway back, in order to move goods through the northern part of Northern Ontario.”
