We’re back to street names this week, in our local history feature.
Timmins Museum director-curator Karen Bachmann says there were a series of name changes over the years – the most recent around the turn of this century. That was to remove duplications among the four communities that amalgamated, to avoid confusion when first responders are dispatched.
Many of the new street names are in Schumacher. One of them is Father Costello Dr., in honour of Father Les Costello.
“His last church was the one in Schumacher,” says Bachmann, “and as a fitting tribute to a man who had a lot to do with this community, that street was named for Father Les.”
Still in Schumacher, Bachmann notes that the former Second Ave. is now Dwyer Ave.
“The Dwyers were a family that have been in Schumacher for many, many years. They ran the bus and cab services out of the building that is still on Father Costello Drive. So that’s where that one comes from.”
We’ll have more street names next week.
