Annual Timmins Multicultural Festival a different way of finding your ethnic roots

Already known for its ethnic diversity, Timmins is expanding in that respect.

Proof can be had at the 51st Timmins Multicultural Festival on Sunday, May 28th at the McIntyre Arena.

Multicultural Society president and festival chair Marnie Lapierre says membership has doubled in the last couple years, with newcomers stepping up to share their cultural traditions.

“We have a massive contingent from South Africa, Latin America, among a few others that are just signing on,” she boasts. “There are so many that it’s been a fun chore.”

The festival begins with the traditional parade of nations, followed by displays, costumes, performances and food.

Lapierre says with so many people researching their family trees and getting in touch with their ethnic roots, this is a good opportunity.

“I know there’s tools on the internet that can help you with that, but this has a real personal touch to it. Everybody wants to share, and they’re excited to meet new people here in the community, and this is a great way to do it.”
