Signage installed for location of new terminus in Porcupine

Progress continues to be made to restore passenger rail service to Northern Ontario. Timmins MPP George Pirie, Associate Transportation Minister Stan Cho, Ontario Northland Transportation Commission officials unveiled signs on Monday morning where the new terminus will be located in Porcupine just off Falcon Street.

“If you travel east on Highway 101 going through Porcupine, just before the train tracks that are still there you will see the two signs, and it says this is the site of train station, the new terminal and rendering of the new train set,” he said.

Pirie wouldn’t elaborate on a date when construction would begin, but hinted that great progress is being made.

“They are doing the drawings right now for the terminal, they’re completing the work on the rails, of course you’ve got the facilities that have to be completed,” he said. “Sdo it will be a few more years.”

The new Northlander Service will stop in Porcupine and then onto Cochrane to drop off passengers connecting to the train to Moosonee. Passenger rail is expected to be rolling again by 2026.
