Free, volunteer income tax service apparently lacking awareness in Timmins

Since the end of February, when we’re all supposed to have our T4 slips and other income tax documents, business has been trickling in to the free service in Timmins and Porcupine, where volunteers complete returns for seniors and low income earners.

One of two volunteers in the east end, Peggy Bendell is frustrated that despite the service she provides along with an office in the 101 Mall, some people aren’t aware of it. She’s heard it several times.

“’Wish I had known it last year, because I paid between $30 and $50,’” she repeats. “All they have, for example, a senior only has at T4AP – that’s pension — and T4AOS. That’s all they have, plus their rent or their city taxes.”

You can contact Peggy Bendell at 705-235-5121, or the office at the 101 Mall at 705-266-0977.

“Well, if you don’t live in the Porcupine-Timmins area,” she adds, “go onto canada.ca and search for something in your community, or call Revenue Canada, the 1-800 number.”
