Tyler Smith says understanding that he needed help hardest part of recovery

A survivor of the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash says the hardest part in his recovery was understanding the words I need help.

Tyler Smith spoke in Timmins at Dante Club and at Timmins High and Vocational School on Tuesday. He says the trauma he was going through following the bus crash caused him to abuse alcohol.  Smith notes that trying to hide behind a mask of emotions was starting to hurt the people he cared about the most.

He recalls a moment shared with his Billet Mom or host mother changed and turned his life around.

Smith began a small clothing company called Not Alone which displays mental health messages because he wanted those affected by trauma to wear their vulnerability proudly.

Smith’s visit was sponsored by a number of groups including the Timmins Chamber of Commerce.
