Outdoor rink returns to Schumacher Public School

The city isn’t ready to open its outdoor rinks yet, but there’s a nice one in Schumacher to use.

It’s at Schumacher Public School.  One of the volunteers behind it is Jasmine Chenier She says it started with contacting principal Shawn Donovan and city councillor Bill Gvozdanovic.

“Really, it stems from growing up in Schumacher and we had this rink as kids, Chenier elaborates. “It was not maintained for about the last seven years, I would say. So we just really wanted to get that started again.”

Chenier says what makes it more important is the number of young families moving into Schumacher.  At least a dozen volunteers help around the rink.

“Those people are shoveling, helping flood, going out with their snowblowers on those bigger snowstorms,” Chenier notes. “So we’ve had amazing people step up in the community.”

If you want to volunteer or make a donation towards benches and a warming station, go to the Schumacher Neighbourhood Watch Facebook page.

Skating is available 24 hours, with lights allowing that.
