A Christmas tradition for almost four decades is back in Timmins this year, after a couple years off during the pandemic. It’s the annual hockey tournament involving alumni of Ecole Secondaire Catholique Thériault.
“In French, Tournoi des Anciens,” says Jonathan St-Pierre, who is one of six committee members. The tournament is December 28th, 29th and 30th at the Sportsplex, with games running from eight in the morning until midnight.
“And originally, it was Jean St-Jean from Thériault who started it,” St-Pierre says of one of his fellow committee members. “He’s one of the teachers, now retired. This will be our 34th year.”
The tournament always attracts more than 200 players.
St-Pierre says there will be three divisions. That’s one for younger players – including 2022 graduates – middle, and older. Sign up is December 22nd and 23rd from 7:00pm until midnight at Full Beard Brewing.
“So a guy can come in, put down $40 cash. You get to play, usually a minimum is two to three games. The old guys will play three games. Young guys, depending on how many teams there are, they can have 16 teams in that division. They can play up to five to six games.”
All the money raised by the tournament goes to the hockey program at Thériault.
