Ontario mines minister and Timmins MPP George Pirie has announced a new fund to strengthen the new economy, and make Northern Ontario the world supplier of minerals critical to making electric car batteries.
He says the $5-million fund makes up to $500,000 dollars available to any company in the sector, covering half of their project cost.
“Our allies are looking for a new supplier of critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt and lithium from a jurisdiction with the highest environmental, social and government standards,” Pirie remarked. “Northern Ontario will become that supplier.”
He went on to say that it’s more than a critical mineral strategy.
“It’s also about building an integrated supply chain with clean technologies by connecting mineral producers in Northern Ontario to the manufacturing might of the south.”
