Tree lighting in South Porcupine Saturday

Saturday night is Christmas tree lighting night in at least two city locations.

Tourism Timmins and the Community Park Association light up Hollinger Park at 6:00pm.

Then at 7:00, the Porcupine Horticultural Society lights up its own 18-foot tree that it planted a few years ago next to the Scout Hall on Legion Drive.

Society president Catharine Cribbs says the annual festivities then move into the hall for homemade cookies, hot chocolate and a singalong.

“It’s all free,” she points out. “It’s been well attended by families. It’s just a really good time. It’s very old-fashioned.”

Cribbs says anyone is invited, regardless of your religion.  She says it’s a light celebration for the dark time of the year. And although it’s non-denominational, Cribbs says it’s not a coincidence that it happens on the eve of Advent.

“That’s the start of the Christian calendar for Christmas, which goes six weeks,” she explains. “It ends on Little Christmas, the 6th of January. Supposedly that’s when the Wise Men arrived with their gifts.”
