Woman goes through ice on the walking trail around the flooded Porcupine Lake

Here’s a cautionary tale about why you should stay far back from the flooded Mattagami River and Porcupine Lake.

Early Wednesday afternoon, a 74-year-old woman was walking on the trail around Porcupine Lake, just off the end of Shamrock Ave. in South Porcupine.  She thought she was on an iced-over part of the trail.  Timmins Police communications coordinator Marc Depatie says she was actually on thin ice on top the overflow of water and went right through.

First responders took care of the woman.  Police officers and firefighters stayed on the scene until city public works brought in barricades for the area.
