Bruce Ave. bridge contractor looking for two-week extension, still finishing this fall

Demolition of the bridge on Bruce Ave. in South Porcupine is almost complete.

City of Timmins manager of engineering Glen Macdonald says workers encountered an issue.

“They found wood piles below the footings and so they’re coming up with a little bit of a different construction plan to deal with the wood piles on the older structure, or the part that they’re demolishing,” he explains.

Once that’s done, a new bridge will be built.

It’s still going to be an early fall completion, but Macdonald says the contractor is asking for an extension. It’s because of a delay while waiting for Ontario One Locate to do its work at the site.

“So there’s a gas main in that area and getting the locates was important for doing the underground work,” Macdonald observes, “so they’re going to be requesting a formal extension.”

Municipalities and construction associations have been complaining about the backlog at Ontario One Locate delaying a lot of projects across the province.
