Don’t call her ‘Deputy Mayor’: Kristin Murray is now Mayor of Timmins

In a unanimous vote, Kristin Murray has been named mayor of Timmins.

The Ward 5 councillor was doing the mayor’s job since George Pirie was elected to the legislature two months ago.  By making her mayor, council is meeting requirements of provincial legislation to  fill the vacant seat until November 15th

The half Jamaican-half Cree Murray is the city’s first mayor who is Indigenous and a person of colour.  She says the support of council is significant in this community that’s growing in diversity.

“I say that to say this as well: I don’t want people to just see me as a person of colour,” she states. “I’m really committed to this community,  love the grass roots level and working with community to create good change.”

Murray also says that by its support, council sees her as someone who can do the job.

“There’s so much to being a councillor. You have to be very dynamic, you have to meet the needs of a very unique and diverse community with a lot of needs. I’m really happy that they have a lot of faith in me to continue out the term.”

Murray will run in the October 24th election, but is adamant it’s to return as a Ward 5 councillor.
