Mattagami Blvd. S. being used improperly

Timmins Police are cracking down on the number of near collisions caused by drivers going the wrong way on Mattagami Boulevard South.

Communications coordinator Marc Depatie reminds us that it’s the short stretch of road that you can legally use coming off the bridge on Algonquin.

“It is a one-way street for safety reasons, obviously,” he notes. “The signage is very clear. It is never intended to be used as an access point, unless of course a detour is enacted.”

That detour was in place last year, during connecting link reconstruction, when there was no westbound traffic there.

“That was a rare departure from its intended purpose,” Depatie remarks. “It was a necessary measure. Now that we’ve returned or resumed to normal usage of that roadway, it is for southbound traffic only.”

Depatie says several near collisions have been reported in recent days. Getting caught going the wrong way is worth a fine and three demerit points.
