Still quiet forest fire-wise in our region

As of Sunday afternoon, there was only one small forest fire burning in our region.

It’s just southwest of Timmins, off Highway 144, and reported to be under control at two hectares in area.  That’s roughly two football fields.

It’s been a good season so far.  Natural resources ministry forest fire information officer Evan Lizotte says it’s partly due to ideal weather.  But he takes any opportunity to urge anyone out in the bush to follow Ontario’s outdoor burning regulations.

“Fires are to be ignited no sooner than two hours before sunset and extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise,” he says.  That rule could be superseded by municipal regulations around when you can light a fire and when it must be put out.

“Please always have tools and water adequate enough to contain the fire at the site,” Lizotte continues. “Know the rules for safe burning.”

If you spot a forest fire anywhere north of the French and Mattawa River, phone 310-FIRE.  South of there, call 9-1-1.
