Wheels rolling to fill mayor’s vacancy

The results of the June 2nd provincial election have been verified, making the new MPP for Timmins, George Pirie, officially unable to continue as mayor of the city.

Clerk Steph Palmateer told council Tuesday night that it has 60 days to fill the vacancy until the October 24th municipal election. He suggested it decide at its August 9th regular meeting..

“If they choose to fill that position from within council,” he tells My Timmins Now Dot Com, they would not then need to backfill the council position, because it would be within 90 days of the municipal election.”

“There’s no requirement that it be filled from the existing members of council,” Palmateer adds. “They could hold applications, whatever council sees fit.”

However, it’s likely that council will opt to have Deputy Mayor Kristin Murray continue to perform the mayor’s duties for the rest of the term.
