Nomination period for mayor, council and school board election opens soon

Right across Ontario, the municipal election is on October 24th. The nomination period opens this coming Monday, and closes on August 19th.

City clerk Steph Palmateer is in charge of the process in Timmins.

“Interested parties who want to run either for mayor or council or any of the school board trustee positions can come to City Hall at Service Timmins and pick up a nomination package,” he instructs.

There are fees involved.

“So if you’re running for mayor, there’s a $200 filing fee,” says Palmateer, “plus a $200 refundable sign deposit.”

You get that deposit back for taking down your campaign signs.

Council and school board candidates only pay a $100 filing fee. Council candidates are subjected to the same sign deposit and, like mayoralty candidates, need the signatures of 25 nominators.
