More measures coming to slow traffic down coming eastbound into South Porcupine

Another attempt is being made at getting traffic to slow down through a perennially concerning area of Timmins.  It’s at the eastbound entrance to South Porcupine, from the Bruce Wye to Legion Dr.

At Tuesday night’s council meeting, director of engineering Pat Seguin reported that a radar sign beside Highway 101 proves that traffic’s going too fast.  It’s one of those signs that flashes your speed at you as you go by.

Seguin says the speed limit will be lowered to 70 km/h at one spot, and even slower further on.

“We’re going to be reducing the speed west of the Bruce Wye and then at Porcupine Creek reduce it down to 50 there, before you start getting into more of the urbanized area,” he said.

Mayor George Pirie welcomed the lower speed, but said one element must be part of the plan.

“Without a doubt, we need enforcement,” he emphasized. “I drive that every single day and we could reduce the speeds, but we need enforcement because they’re (drivers) not paying attention to the speed right now.”

Amid concerns of limited police resources, Seguin said the radar sign also provides data about times of day when speeds are highest.  He said that might allow police to deploy officers specifically at those times.
