NDP trying private member’s bill again to have Ontario gas prices regulated

The Ontario NDP has tried it before, and is taking another run at ending what it calls price gouging at the gas pump.

Timmins MPP Gilles Bisson has reintroduced a private member’s bill calling for the Ontario Energy Board to set a price for fuel that’s uniform across the province, every Monday.

“You can buy a case of beer in Cornwall and pay the same price in Kenora. But you pay gas in Toronto at $1.50 and today you pay $1.70 in Timmins. That just doesn’t make any sense,” he told a news conference that included party leader Andrea Horwath. “The public understands that gas companies are taking advantage of the market.”

Bisson says the price difference is sometimes wider than that just in the north, 30 cents a litre cheaper in Sturgeon Falls than in Timmins.

He says the legislation would see the Ontario Energy Board set the province-wide retail price every Monday, based on the rack price of oil as it hits the Port of New York.

“And then they make sure that there’s a fair compensation to those people from the time we receive the oil ‘til what we transform it into, gasoline or diesel for your vehicle, so that people can make a return on their investment.”

Bisson emphasizes that “return on investment” does not mean the ability to gouge the market.
