Council approves more money for McIntyre headframe preservation

Preservation of the iconic McIntyre Mine headframe is going to cost more than originally anticipated.

City clerk Steph Palmateer told council Tuesday night that once work began, the contractor and city staff identified several unanticipated deficiencies.  That increases the project cost by about $345,000 over the original $500,000.

“Of note is that we were approved for funding under the Canada Infrastructure Funds program,” Palmateer reported. “So our share of that cost will actually be 26.67% or just over $92,000.”

Mayor George Pirie offered to the discussion about the number-one symbol of the city, a bit of trivia.

Council approved the additional expenditure.  Palmateer will report back on a projected completion date.
