MOH updates hospitalizations and vaccination participation for PHU

It’s difficult to get a handle on the number of current COVID-19 cases, since the provincial changes to testing and reporting.  The figures just aren’t reliable. A new metric being used is hospitalizations. In a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Porcupine Health Unit medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton had this:

“We’re aware of 33 admissions across the region and we know that the provincial reporting tool is, I believe, reporting 85 admissions across the north.”

One caveat: Catton notes that some are admitted because of COVID-19; some get it once they’re in hospital; or test positive for a case contracted prior to admission.

Meanwhile, Dr. Catton is among public health professionals who persist in pushing vaccination as the best tool against COVID-19, and to bring an end to the pandemic. Catton says among people over five years old in Porcupine Health Unit territory, 86.2% have been given a first dose, and 78.7% a second jab.

“Really incredible,” she enthuses, “just slightly below the provincial rates of 87.7 for first does and 81.9 for second doses.”

Catton refers to that as great news, although with room to improve.
