Snowmobile trails around Timmins now open for the season, called ‘passable’

You can add snowmobile trails around Timmins to the ones that are open between Iroquois Falls and Mattice.  That news comes from Gilbert Fortin, communications director for the Timmins Snowmobile Club and governor of the Timiskaming-Abitibi Trail Association.

“Just over 100 km that are becoming available,” he says, “and of course we tell the riders to go to the ITG (Interactive Trail Guide) link to see exactly which ones they are.” The trails that are open are passable, he says, but not safe over the 50 kmh speed limit.

So far, Timmins is not linked to Iroquois Falls, but Fortin is hoping to have that accomplished in the next week.

He says Cochrane and Kapuskasing are always open earlier, because most of their trails are on abandoned roads, so there’s less set-up necessary than Timmins area trails.

“We have a lot of marsh area that we have to wait to freeze to go and pack, freeze, pack again before we have a big tractor going on them.”
