Québec cyclist headed to the Arctic Ocean on a winter trek across Canada

A 40-year-old Québec carpenter is spending his winter cycling from Montreal to Tuktoyaktuk, in the Northwest Territories.

We caught up to Jean-Pierre Tremblay on his way through this area.

He got on his bike on November 19th. He expects to be on the shore of the Arctic Ocean in late April, fulfilling his personal challenge and reveling in the Canadian winter.

“There’s only one road in Canada that passes the Arctic Circle and that makes it to the Arctic Ocean,” he says, “and it brings you to that little town and that’s where I’m going.”

Along the way, Tremblay camps in his prospector tent equipped with a foldable titanium wood stove.

“I chop down a couple dead trees and I have a little fire going every night in the evening. I can dry out my stuff, cook and just be warm. So yeah, you know, it’s maybe not as intense as it sounds to camp all the time.”

Tremblay usually camps on Crown land or unplowed forestry roads.

Here’s the complete interview with J.P. Tremblay.
