Timmins history: the Stan Fowler Santa Claus Fund tradition continues

The Moose FM-Schumacher Lions Club radiothon for the Stan Fowler Santa Claus Fund raised $46,000 last Thursday. It goes to ensuring that needy families have a good Christmas meal.

More this week, during our look at Timmins history, on Stan Fowler and the fund that he started in 1948, raising $2,800 in that first year.

Timmins Museum director-curator Karen Bachmann says Fowler himself was directly involved into the 1980s.

“It was then handed off to the fire department and the Timmins Lions Club and the Schumacher Lions Club, who then took it over,” she recounts.

“And many of will remember the telethons on television that always took place in December. Now that’s moved off to radio and the Moose is now doing the Moose radiothon.  The tradition continues in the community.”
